Nancy Wexler / Empathy / Venezuela 1992

Eduardito, the boy in this picture, was 15 years old when Nancy Wexler embraced him in 1992. They had been friends over a  decade since Dr. Wexler took her first trip to Venezuela in 1979. He lived in a very poor, rural fishing village along the shores of Lake Maracaibo in the state of Zulia, Venezuela. These villages have the highest concentration of Huntington’s disease (HD) in the world and the largest family living with the disease.

HD is a dominantly inherited, neurodegenerative disease causing irreversible decline in control of mood, memory, and movement. There is currently no treatment or cure. Each child of an affected parent has a 50% risk of inheriting the same lethal affliction. Eduardito died from juvenile Huntington’s disease (JHD) in March 1999 when Wexler and her research team were there. Eduardito was part of a large family. His father, Jose, had 17 children. Of the 17, 6 died of JHD, 3 died of adult HD. One of Jose’s grandsons died at age 10 of JHD. It was a family fraught with a lot of kids with JHD. Dr. Wexler herself lost her mother, grandfather and three uncles to HD. A neuropsychologist, she has devoted her life to searching for treatments and cures.

Due to her efforts, the gene causing Huntington’s disease was discovered in 1993. Dr. Wexler hoped she might be spared the same fate as her mother. Earlier this year, she acknowledged she was not. Now at 74 years old, she continues the fight – “Promising research motivates me every day. I am optimistic and hopeful that cures are within our grasp.”
